Why URUK exists

A few years ago, a friend who runs an independent press in Beirut tried to put her catalogue online. She tried Shopify. She tried a custom WordPress build. She tried a regional alternative built for the Gulf market. None of them worked properly in Arabic. None of them handled the realities of her business — readers in Cairo who couldn't pay with a credit card, books that needed to ship to Riyadh, a customer service inbox that flipped between two languages depending on who was writing.

After eighteen months, she gave up. Her catalogue went back into a spreadsheet she emailed to people who asked.

That story isn't unusual. It's almost the rule.

The gap is structural

Independent publishers — the people who actually decide what gets translated, what gets reissued, what gets championed when nobody else will — operate in a strange middle ground. They're too small to build their own e-commerce platform. They're too specific to be served by global tools. And they're often in regions that international software treats as edge cases: places where credit cards don't work the same way, where shipping is complicated, where right-to-left text breaks half the layouts.

The result is that the people doing the most interesting publishing work have the worst tools.

What URUK Shelf is

URUK Shelf is a platform for independent publishers to sell books online. It looks like a publisher's own store, on a publisher's own domain, with a publisher's own brand. It handles the things that don't usually get handled: bilingual interfaces that respect both directions of writing, regional payment methods, shipping logic that works for a press in Lebanon trying to reach a reader in Morocco.

There are five payment options, three product modes, six pricing plans. The complexity is real because the publishing world is actually complicated. We've made a deliberate choice not to hide that complexity behind a single rigid template.

What URUK Read is

URUK Read is the discovery layer. Every publisher on URUK Shelf appears here — whether they sell directly through us or run their own checkout. It's the answer to a question we kept hearing: "How does anyone find me?"

When a reader comes to URUK Read, they're not browsing a marketplace. They're meeting publishers. The publisher's name is on every book. The publisher's history is on every profile. The publisher gets the relationship, the email list, the loyalty. We're the introduction, not the owner.

What URUK is not

We're not a publishing service. We don't help you write or edit books. We're not a literary curator deciding what's worth reading. We're not Amazon or Goodreads or Wattpad. We're not trying to disintermediate publishers — we're trying to put them at the centre.

The companies that came before us tried to be platforms in the strict economic sense: extract value from the participants, accumulate it centrally, scale by squeezing margins. That's not the bet here.

The bet

The bet is that independent publishers, given the right tools, will outwork and outlast the algorithmic stores. Their catalogues are better. Their relationships with readers are deeper. Their books are stranger and more interesting. The infrastructure has been the missing piece, not the talent.

URUK exists to fix the infrastructure. The publishers do the rest.
